Organic or mineral: which nutrient system suits your substrate?
The right choice starts with the substrate and nutrient system. Organic or mineral is one characteristic; growth stage, intended use and compatible supplements are equally important.
Substrate first, product second
Soil or peat mixes and coco substrates place different demands on a nutrient system. CANNA describes separate product lines for these uses. A mineral nutrient for soil is therefore not equivalent to a coco system simply because it is labelled mineral. Read the product's explicit substrate recommendation.
What organic and mineral mean here
The labels help you identify the approach of each manufacturer's line. CANNA Terra Vega, for example, is a mineral growth nutrient for the corresponding soil or peat substrates. BIOCANNA offers an organic product line. This classification describes the product concept; it does not make a blanket judgement about which system produces better results.
Distinguish base nutrients from supplements
A growth or flowering nutrient has a different role from a root supplement or booster. A supplement does not automatically replace suitable base nutrition. Check the product function before combining several bottles. Names alone do not always tell you which products are intended to be used together.
Keep your starting selection manageable
- Substrate: What is the product explicitly intended for?
- Stage: Is it a growth nutrient, flowering nutrient or supplement?
- System: Which combination does the manufacturer recommend?
- Pack size: Does the quantity suit your needs and its shelf life after opening?
Suitable base products are usually easier to understand than a collection of different boosters. Small packs can be useful when starting out, but price per litre alone should not determine your choice.
Manufacturer instructions remain authoritative
Follow the current label and the manufacturer's instructions. Organic does not mean unrestricted quantities, and mineral does not automatically mean more demanding. If you know your substrate and existing system, we can check together which products fit.
| Product group | What to check when choosing |
|---|---|
| Base growth nutrient | Substrate and stated growth stage |
| Base flowering nutrient | Compatible product line and flowering stage |
| Root supplement / booster | Specific function and intended combination |
| Organic / mineral | Manufacturer classification and intended use |
| Pack size | Requirements, concentrate quantity and storage instructions |
Frequently asked questions
Can a booster replace base nutrients?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly describes the product as complete nutrition for the intended use. Do not plan a supplement as a base nutrient on the strength of its name alone.
Is organic automatically easier?
The label alone says little about the effort involved. A clear system, suitable products and current manufacturer instructions are what matter.
Can I combine different brands?
Different brand names alone indicate neither compatibility nor incompatibility. Check individual functions and approvals; if anything remains unclear, we can help put the information into context.
Two product lines for comparison
CANNA Terra Vega and Bio Vega illustrate why you should read the precise product line: Terra Vega is described for peat-based media; Bio Vega belongs to the BIOCANNA line and, according to the manufacturer, is approved for organic farming. In our nutrient range always compare intended use alongside the badge.
