Autoflowering or photoperiodic: which suits you?
Autoflowering describes flowering behaviour. Feminised describes the expected sex of the plants. Both can apply to the same strain, so the specific strain type matters when choosing.
Understanding the terminology
A feminised strain is bred to produce predominantly female plants. The term alone does not tell you whether flowering begins with age or in response to day length. Photoperiodic strains respond to the light period; autoflowering strains begin flowering independently of it. An autoflowering strain can also be feminised.
Which timing figure are you comparing?
For a photoperiodic strain, a statement such as ‘Flowering: 55–65 days’ usually describes the flowering phase. The preceding growth phase is additional. For an autoflowering strain, the manufacturer may instead mean the entire time from germination to harvest. Only compare these figures once you know what they refer to. Manufacturer figures are guidance, not guaranteed dates.
Making your choice clearer
- Planning: Check whether you need a stated total cycle time or a separate flowering time.
- Space: Compare expected size and the information for your intended location.
- Experience: Read our classification alongside the description. Autoflowering does not automatically mean beginner-friendly.
A fixed, age-dependent development leaves less room for delays. A photoperiodic strain can offer more flexibility in scheduling. The better option for you also depends on how well your location and available time fit together.
Our advice when shopping
Start with two or three suitable strain profiles and compare the same characteristics: strain type, timing, size and difficulty. A high THC figure does not answer these questions. If anything in a profile remains unclear, ask us before buying; we will help you understand the information.
| Characteristic | Automatic / Autoflowering | Photoperiodic |
|---|---|---|
| Start of flowering | Age-dependent | Dependent on the light period |
| Timing in the profile | Often the full cycle; check the wording | Often only the flowering phase |
| When choosing | Consider total cycle time and size together | Distinguish flowering time from growth time |
| Sex characteristics | Can be feminised | Can be feminised or regular |
Frequently asked questions
Are feminised seeds always photoperiodic?
No. Feminised and autoflowering describe different characteristics. Read both details in the profile; the category alone does not answer the question.
Which option is better for beginners?
Strain type alone does not determine this. Consider the specific classification, described size and intended location. A small, manageable shortlist makes comparison easier.
Does short flowering time mean a short total cycle?
No. When comparing, explicitly note whether the figure describes the flowering phase or the entire development. Only then is the comparison meaningful.
